” There was a old cabin on the deer lease that members spent the night in. Wasn’t much to it, just 2 rooms and a roof over your head. Well, about 2am, bill heard scratching on the outside wall. everyone was sleeping on the floor of the house–no matresses. well, after a few seconds, the scratching animal entered the house–and everyone immediately knew what it was by the smell. the skunk was walking only a couple of inches away from bill, and he slowly pulled his sleeping bag completely over his head. his plan was just to let the skunk walk by and try to let it find a door we would open–when safe to do so–and go back outside. Well, sam had a different idea. all we heard was “i got it”– BOOM –immediately before we heard the boom all our eyes were watering and we couldn’t breathe. then on to of that our ears were ringing so bad, we couldn’t hear anything. when we came to our senses–outside of the cabin, we realized sam had shot the skunk at point blank range with a 30-06. the next morning, we were all sleeping in our trucks when some other members came in. they said they could smell the skunk way up the road from the cabin. needless to say, it took a few weeks before we could sleep in the cabin again. and i never got the smell out of the clothes or the sleeping bag i was using. sam was never allowed to bring his gun into a confined space living area again. and he had to go get the skunk out of the house. I still don’t know what was funnier, reliving the shooting, or watching sam gag his gut up trying to get that skunk out of the cabin. “

“” Doing ADC work on a golf course a couple years ago and had a set in woodchuck hole off one of the fairways. no bait.. (the fox would check every other hole each night) short chain. well naturally … skunk the first night. Dang.. short chain and he sees me coming and head dives in the hole. half in half out. so i take the 22 and shoot him up into his lungs and move on. come back after checking the rest of the traps and im sure the skunk is dead. i reach down and grab the chain and i took both barrels in the chest and face… first thing i did was tuck and roll.. down the hill.. grrrr now im not happy. unload a couple more rounds in him while im getting aired out. went back and tapped the trap with a stick and each time he would empty his rear… man was the ole lady not very nice when i got home. i think that jacket still stinks to this day. that was one tuff skunk! “

The fact that I’m a moron has nothing to do with my advanced age. I’ve been a moron most of my life and this story just proves it. I caught a skunk in a foothold set for raccoon and because I also happened to be carrying my trap line pistol at the time, I thought myself invincible. Because this set was under an overhang, I had to get very close to administer the fatal shot. Well by now I’m sure you all guessed who shot first; and at less than 12 inches from my very surprised face.

For those of you that don’t know, a skunk has one of those spray bottles hidden inside its rear end. You know the kind; where you can select either Spray or Stream. Well this particular skunk chose stream and nailed me right across the old eyeballs. Now my first thought was that I would never be able to see again. The burning was incredible. I was basically dripping drops of skunk essence all over my coat. I can’t remember being quite that terrified on the trap line.

The amazing part of this story is that my eyes started tearing immediately and within a short time I was seeing just fine. ( But still not smelling too good ) When I got back to the truck and checked myself out in the rear view mirror I noticed that my eyelids weren’t even red from the crying. Only God could make something that leads you to believe that you will be permanently scarred and then leaves no visible after-affects.

If you think that I have learned my lesson about keeping my distance from skunks, you have not read my story in the January/February edition of W.C.T. Magazine
